Distractions

Looking around, my eyes are filled with wonder
Temporal things distract with glitz and glam
Gifts bestowed from God vie for a place in my heart
Can mere things compare with the living Holy One?
Moth and rust shall corrupt them, diamonds pale in his light

Moping about, brooding that things didn’t go my way
Things and plans I trusted in, when my faith should be solely in him
My Father provides my daily bread and prospers me
Daily, his mercies shower upon me anew
He began a good work in me and will complete it

With eyes lifted up, I see. My treasure is in heaven
Naught will gain from earthly things; my riches abound in him
O’ for the day when I'll see his face and temporal distractions are erased
When my sins no longer get in the way of my worship
Days unending, basking in the Light of life

I hope to hear him say well done, engulfed by his embrace
To bow at his feet, my crown cast before him
His scars before me, an emblem of grace
I can’t fathom the beauty my eyes will behold-the Holy Trinity
When faith becomes sight, I'll no longer glimpse in a dim mirror

In the short time I spend here on earth, may my distractions be lessened
May my toils be for Christ’s kingdom and not for earthly gain
May I be like my Master, a servant. May I love my neighbor as myself
May your light shine through me, my darkness diminished
May thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven

This poem was born out of my frustration with distractions and my desire for a more joyous walk with Christ.
