The Need of the World

All of mankind has a great need of a Savior. " For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," Romans 3:23. In our natural state, we cannot see the things of God; we cannot hear the things of God; we are spiritually dead. By the work of the Holy Spirit, believers are given eyes to see, and ears to hear. Those united to Christ by faith are born again, made alive spiritually and given eternal life. Christ died for sinners, and rose again conquering death. God is merciful to all those that trust in Christ alone for salvation. He will not turn away from sinners who recognize their need before him and call out for mercy. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”  Matthew 5:3

Although believers still struggle with sin, in Christ they are free from the bondage of sin. By grace all of our iniquities are forgiven. By grace we are free to obey God rather than give into the demands of our flesh. Romans 5:12-Romans 6:23.

This poem is about the hope we have in the Lord.  The stanza about blind men refers to those who try to earn favor with God or justify themselves before God by their works. Justification is in Christ alone who died for our sins, bearing God's wrath for us so that we may have eternal life. The stanza about dead men, refers to those trying to find life in their sins, where there is only death. Our only hope of life is in Christ.

Flesh of Adam, be silent, you’re dead to me
In the Second Adam, my life is hid. In him I live
By one man’s sin, all men sinners became
But grace, grace abounds! A Second Adam came
My flesh born of Adam was buried
I’m raised, raised up with Christ in life anew
The Second Adam who never sinned
He kept the law. None other can
Once blind, I see. Once deaf, I hear. Once dead, I live.
My debt of sin was washed away
Christ met my need at Calvary
I look about and see- the need of the world
The need of I, is the need of every man

Blind men working, working
Attempting to keep the law
A facade of righteousness
Their hearts in shackles of sin
Adding debts to debts
Drinking a sugary poison
There’s a sign overhead,
They cannot read- "beware
The wages of sin is death"
The only way out is Christ
If the Son shall set you free
You shall be free indeed

Deaf men cannot hear the Gospel call
There’s One who gives them ears to hear
The sweetest sound of all-
A precious Savior calling, calling
Knocking at their door
His plea is "follow me,
Be zealous therefore and repent"

Dead men playing and reveling
In sins fire- how warm it looks
To their cold dark hearts
Yet, strangely there’s a void,
A disconnect- as they warm in fire
Inside they still feel cold so
Deeper and deeper into the fire they go
Their only hope is One, who makes alive
The Holy One that breathed life
Into Adam bestows a second birth
Cold dark hearts are filled with light and life
Made of flesh instead of stone

O the need of I, is the need of every man
Praise God I see, I hear, I live!
My debt of sin was washed away
Christ met my need at Calvary
Praise God the One who gave me life
Died for the sins of the world
By his death, many sons were brought to glory
God calls me to plant seeds in soil
God and God alone will harvest has he please
His power is at work. His kingdom will advance
Blind, deaf, and dead men will arise in life anew
Singing "praise God from whom all blessings flow"

This poem references several passages of Scripture, I have included some of the references below:

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. Romans 5:12-15

Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Revelation 3:19-22

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36

The last line of the poem “praise God from whom all blessings flow”  is from the Common Doxology
