Light of The World

I wrote this poem as I reflected on our Savior’s birth and wondered at the Lord’s great gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. I cannot think of his birth without also thinking of his death; he came to die so that we may live.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. John 3:16-21

In the black of the night, a star in the sky lighted the way
To the Light of the world, a babe in the hay.
Meek and lowly, having no comely form,
He’s the most beautiful sight eyes can see.
Messiah, Immanuel, Savior of men is he.

In the light of the day, darkness subverted the sky
As the Light hung beaten, bloody, and waiting to die.
Pure and Holy, having known no sin,
He bore the wrath that sin ensues.
Crying it is finished, our Savior paid our dues.

The Light rose victorious; darkness cowered conquered
As the Light shone forth, bursting from the tomb.
Strong and mighty, having no weakness,
He laid down his life and took it up again
King of kings, ascended to heaven he reigns

Like a thief in the night, the Light shall return;
All knees will bow, all tongues confess that he is Lord of all.
Glorious and perfect, judging all- living and dead.
Saints by blood atoned will worship in glory;
Wicked men shall perish in hell’s fury.
